Yikes! I'm behind...

I'm sorry to admit this, but my promising start with FLORIDA! quickly dwindled. I got busy with editing (again) and future marketing for Book 4 - HAWAII! Pineapple Peril.

The work has been very gratifying as it appears that HAWAII! should be released by the end of the month.

Meanwhile, I've been immersing myself in research for Book 5. Tentative title: FLORIDA! A Gathering of Gators.  I am fascinated by The Everglades and all there is to learn.

Here are just a few of the books I'm reading. Children's books really break down the information, and Gator Country by Rebecca Renner is a fascinating account of alligator poaching.

FLORIDA - Day 2

I got a late start today. Didn't really buckle down until after lunch. I prefer to write in the morning as I'm fresh and more creative. Plus, it's a terrific way to start the day - already having "gotten my words done."

But I had so much admin (translated: email, computer work, etc. etc. etc. - even cleaning) to do that the time disappeared.

Then after lunch, I almost went to the pool. But that nagging voice in my head wouldn't quit. It kept at me, "Get it done!" it kept saying. So, I did.

And I'm thrilled with the number 633 which was how many words I added to my total. Plus, there's no empty box on my calendar announcing that I didn't get any words written today. ☺

FLORIDA Has Begun

What does a writer of a series do as soon as one manuscript is officially sent off?

She starts the next book!

Book 5 of the Adventure USA series will be FLORIDA! A Gathering of Gators and will be released in 2027. I'll be sharing my writing journey and my writing calendar, which keeps me on target. I officially started FLORIDA last year, so Chapter 1 is completed. But then I returned to editing HAWAII and haven't touched FLORIDA until yesterday.

Here's the calendar for July:

Yesterday was very busy, but I was still able to do some serious thinking, research, and even write 127 words. I know that's a paltry amount, but it still counts! Every word adds to the final total, which for HAWAII was over 29,000 words.

If you're reading this and you're a writer, I encourage you to make use of a writing calendar. There are many available as free downloads that you can customize for each month. I keep a running total of my daily word count. At the end of the week, I add up my success. It's amazing to me—each time I begin—how encouraging it is to see the word count soar (or crawl, as the case may be...).

Writing is lonely (although I'll admit I enjoy my own company), difficult, tricky, and downright exasperating at times. But it's so worth it to have a great manuscript at the end that you know readers will enjoy.

I'd love to read about your writing journey. Please share in the comments. Or contact me on my website: www.barbaralarmonfailing.com

Hope to hear from you!

HAWAII! in Production!

I'm thrilled to announce that HAWAII! Pineapple Peril is in production. There's been a few hiccups this year (and last year) that delayed the completion and even more importantly, the editing process.

I'm really happy with the final manuscript and look so forward to sharing it with you. Fingers crossed that it could possibly be released in August.

In the meantime, here's a gorgeous view of Waimea Canyon:

HAWAII! Cover Without Color

Here's the latest cover in black and white for HAWAII! We're getting closer!

Choices

For the Value Study, #4 was the one Erik liked the best, and it was also my favorite. But when we don't agree, I always yield to his greater experience...

For the Color Study, #5, the orange and purple one was our favorite so far (without the stripe down the leg)...

Color Studies for HAWAII!

The next tasks are the color studies. These are small, quick, and low-stake sketches or paintings used to plan color palettes, compositions, and lighting.

Here are some choices. Which one is your favorite?☺

Value Study for HAWAII!

It's been quite a busy year with the release of Book 3: OHIO! The Mystery of the Mound last spring.

A trip to five of the Hawaiian Islands was an amazing experience and supplied me with so much information for Book 4: HAWAII! Pineapple Peril. I completed the first draft by September 2025.

Next came editing, editing, and more editing.

Erik Drohman, illustrator and graphic designer extraordinaire, has been working hard on the cover. Here's the "value study" which is a simplified sketch focusing only on light and dark tones—no color—to establish composition, depth, and lighting.

Let me know which one you like the best. I'll let you know my choice later...

I can't wait for the color version! Stay tuned!

First draft of Book 4 - HAWAII! Pineapple Peril DONE!

I'm thrilled to report that the first draft of Book 4 - HAWAII! Pineapple Peril is complete! It's been a long time coming, because I kept getting interrupted.

However, as I reviewed my writing calendar pages from January to August, I only counted eleven weeks of work, which is about what it takes. So, in a way, I was right on target, just not working consistently every day.

Next task is to read it through - today or tomorrow - and see how much editing has to be done.

 Happy Labor Day weekend!

The Boss

For several weeks, I've been agonizing over which plot twist Book 4 - "HAWAII! Pineapple Peril" should take. There are several strands I'm considering, and I can't decide which one is the best. In other words, I'm spending a lot of time staring at the screen. Getting nothing. Nothing.

But this morning, over breakfast, I read an article in an old Sunday NYT about Bruce Springsteen and his creative process: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/18/arts/music/bruce-springsteen-tracks-ii-the-lost-albums-interview.html

"I'm a soul miner," he said. "So I'm down in the mine and I'm chipping away. And very often I'm getting nothing, nothing, nothing—more often than not. Nothing, nothing, nothing. And then you hit a vein. And when you hit that vein, Bang! Things come pouring out. And you've struck some gold, musical gold..."

Or in my case - maybe - prose gold.

Thank you, Bruce, for the reminder that much of creating we can't control. We have to wait for the door to open into that part of us that dreams up stories, music, poems, and art.

Back to Hawaii

FYI: I'm not actually going back to Hawaii. Although, I am keeping the above photo open on my computer as I write. I'm back to Book 4: HAWAII! Pineapple Peril and trying to get a completed first draft. Then, I can let it sit for a bit before I rip it apart.

Today's word count was 503. However, that's not the whole story, as I spent a huge amount of time reviewing the story, editing, and thinking (staring at the computer screen). I made terrific progress because of the word count, which is one metric that I can use to track my progress. But best of all, I have a road map for my next several writing sessions. I may not know exactly what I'm going to write, but I do know where I'll begin tomorrow.

Stay tuned. I'm going to be better at posting my progress.

Meanwhile, I'm over the moon about the great response to Book 3: OHIO! The Mystery of the Mound. Thanks, everyone!

HAWAII!

It's a new year and a new book!

I started Book 4: HAWAII! this morning. I was able to insert 263 words for today in my January writing calendar. That's not very much, but it's definitely a start.

I spent a lot of time staring at the screen and researching Hawaii. I finally found a starting point, and then the words began to flow. I am so excited about the research for this book, as Hawaii is such a rich state with so much to learn about.

Stay tuned as I flesh out this plot.

Aloha!

Humming Along with Book 3: OHIO! The Mystery of the Mound

The cover (and interior design, etc.) of Adventure USA - Book 3: OHIO! The Mystery of the Mound continues to hum along. I have seen some early concepts, and I am over the moon at how well Erik Drohman conceives the perfect cover to showcase the themes of each book in the Adventure USA series.

While I wait for its publication in early (fingers crossed) 2025, my mind has been hopping with ideas for Book 4: HAWAII! I don't have a title yet, but plenty of plot strands and ideas continue to percolate.

Here's my writing calendar ready to go for January:

My technique is to enter the number of words for each day (with a big old black X for a day I didn't write), and then keep a running total at the bottom of each daily box. Off to the right I write the weekly total. It really works!

I would love to start right now, this very minute, but I hesitate to turn on the waterfall of creativity during this season. Anyone else feel the same?

Happy Holidays!

Ready for My Editor: OHIO! The Mystery of the Mound

I'm thrilled to be close to sending OHIO! to my editor. I'm very excited about the story and its many dimensions. I can't wait for it to be released.

In the meantime, I'm also getting ready for the OELMA (Ohio Educational Library Media Association) Conference in October. I'll be part of their author showcase, so I've been gathering materials for my table. Front and center will be this framed letter from the governor of Massachusetts commending MASSACHUSETTS! The Stolen Spyglass:

MASSACHUSETTS! The Stolen Spyglass

I'm over the moon at the imminent release of MASSACHUSETTS! The Stolen Spyglass.

Erik Drohman, the very talented illustrator and graphic designer, has done a superb job on the cover, the illustrations, and the interior.

I can't wait for MASSACHUSETTS! to join its place beside ALASKA! More information is here on my website: https://barbaralarmonfailing.com/

Doing Research for OHIO

I do a lot of research for all my books, and I love it. It makes the books more interesting, and it is fun for me to pass along the information to my readers. OHIO! has been more challenging since it deals with the obscure topic of the mounds or earthworks of Ohio.

In January 2023, I was doing research one morning before breakfast and discovered that the Archaeological Society of Ohio was having a meeting that day. It was snowing, but after church, I hopped in the car and sped off to nearby Hillard. I met lots of wonderful people in the display hall and browsed numerous tables/displays of arrowheads and other items. This was the first time that I heard the term "field find." This term is used to describe arrowheads and artifacts found in fields, the most frequent source of finds.

While I was there, I came across the paperback, "Ohio Flint Types," at the book table. The price was more than I wanted to spend, but fortunately, I was able to find a 1973 edition on eBay. This book has been an incredible source of information for me.

When I left the meeting several hours later, considerable snow had fallen, making for a slick trip home. But the trip to the ASO meeting was more than worth it.

First Draft of OHIO - Done!

I have been out of touch, and I apologize. The holidays came and went, and I was busy working on OHIO. Then I traveled a bit in February.

But I am thrilled to announce that I finally (and I mean finally) have a first draft of OHIO! This has been such a hard time coming. My usual approach—sit down and write, and the story will follow—did not work at all. I think it's because the topic, Mounds of Ohio, is a tricky one to explain to children. I had one plot, then another, then another, and on and on.

I spent way too much time staring at the computer screen, hoping for a break-through. I should have gone out for a walk, as Margaret Renkl in her new book, A Company of Crows, so clearly explains. Movement is critical to creativity. A study to measure creativity in college students found unremarkable results when they were sitting, but once they were up and moving around, the screen lit up with their brain activity. I will remember that.

The last few days, I have been editing OHIO, and there is still a whole lot to do. But at least I now have something to edit!

I highly recommend Margaret's excellent book, A Company of Crows. It's a walk through her backyard garden, month by month, and so much more. A book to relax and revel in. It's truly beautiful.

I wanted to insert a cover image of Margaret's book but couldn't. So here's a crow instead.

Back to Work!

I'm happy to report that the story for OHIO! slowly started to find its way, and the plan forward was clear. But then the holidays were here, and I had to make the decision to slow down and focus on family. I wasn't being successful with both writing and holiday preparations, so I stopped.

But now, I'm back! I could have been back a little earlier in the month, but I've been occupied with marketing for ALASKA! and also editing MASSACHUSETTS! All is going very well, and the release date for MASSACHUSETTS! The Stolen Spyglass will be Spring 2024.

This morning, my first task is to reread OHIO! I haven't touched it since the beginning of December, so I'm eager to find out how I feel about it and if my plans for the rest of the book are solid.

Over the Christmas holiday, I spent an afternoon at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Chillicothe, Ohio. The visitor's center featured a fascinating 20 minute film which can be seen here: https://www.nps.gov/media/video/view.htm%3Fid%3D0D6D9715-CD96-9409-65BA31CE0A87522C

I spent a lot of time walking and thinking about these ancient peoples and all that they did to create those amazing earthworks.
